Message to McCain: Pizza Hut ain’t selling tickets to no lynching

You know, maybe there still is hope for John McCain – and no, not through him and hockey-mom organizing a lynching party before voting day, which seems to be the current game plan.

No, going down that old road probably won’t do it for old McMaverick; not with the economy being as it is, and his own party about as popular with most Americans as the New York Times seems to be in Palin country.

So, if your message is “More-of-the-same-please!” and your brand name has become as toxic as Chinese milk, it’s not quite enough to point at your opponent, cry “Terrorist!” and let slip the pitbulls of prejudice and fear.

In other words, if McCain wants to win, he better muzzle Mrs Lipstick and try to pull a less rabid rabbit out of the hat - like Pizza Hut did:

It’s a high street name change that could take some topping. Pizza Hut is to become Pasta Hut in a radical overhaul of the restaurant chain’s menu and image. From this week, pizza will play second fiddle to a range of new pasta dishes to be launched on unsuspecting customers. Pizza Hut signs are currently being taken down and altered as the chain battles to adopt a wholesome image.

Hm? Yesss… Interesting idea, no doubt but – how shall I put it…? When I said, ‘Change the brand name and emulate a fast food joint’, I didn’t mean that our grumpy old vet should start wearing a clown suit and insist people call him Ronald McCain…

After eight years of George W. Bush, the American people may want a little bit more gravitas from their next president than that.

Still, the ‘pizza to pasta’ template might work for McCain as well - and, let’s face it, he and his party could do with a more ‘wholesome image.

Anyway, as a calling card “McCain, Republican” is more of a White House door stop than a presidential power tool – but our senior citizen senator might still be in with a shout if he changed it to “McAle, Real Publican” or something along those lines.

(Fear mongering for fun and profit)

Jan–where do u get this–I am a democrat and -no offense to others–Obama talks the talk–my question –can he walk the walk?? There is no color bias here but there is a certain feel that we don’t get the sense of the real Man–I personally find the cover with Michelle obama offensive-
I may be a starry -eyed American but would hope that cover disappears quickly-Where did it come from???
We are in a situaton here in the old (young) US of A–
and these bias articles help no one to make the right decision.
We are deluged with opinions such as this that just cloud the issues.
    Thanks

Sorry to hear that Pizza Hut has to “Improve”.

Thanks for commenting - as always.

I also have my doubts about Obama - Hell, he is a politician. Anyway, as I wrote in an earlier post, the media are seldom doing the job they are paid to do:

“People [once] trusted journalists, and they trusted their newspapers and TV news shows to present them with the best information and the best analysis there was to be found, on the day. Now? Now, we’ve got those annoying, partisan talking heads, lazy pundits who just repeat whatever the spin doctors from all sides present them with. Even worse, when Obama merely says the word ‘Change’, about 33% of the press come in their collective pants. When Sarah Palin winks, grimaces and spouts inanities, another 33% get their orgasm on camera. While the other 33% of the press is too busy chasing yet another Paris Hilton story.”

I found that cover on Google pictures, when I was looking for something ‘appropriate’ (and it’s where I found that other, even more disgusting one. I felt that others should have the chance to see what kind of shit is out there, but couldn’t stomach to put it up in the column proper.)

Anyway, I would still say that Palin is playing a very dangerous game, playing the fear card the way she’s been doing lately - and the way she’s whipping up the masses, with already quite disgusting and worrying results, with attending supporters shouting ‘terrorist’ and ‘kill him’ and verbially abusing black media personnel.

So, yes, I meant to counter that with an image we are all only too familiar with - but I don’t think we should let her - and McCain! - get away with that kind of shit. People who are willing to risk to raise these old ghosts should be reminded of who went that route in the past, and with what results.

(I’m quite sure I never went to Pizza Hut, so I can’t judge their perceived need for ‘change’.)

P.S.: Ah well, it does mean that late-comers won’t have the chance to see what we were talking about but I’ve removed the link to the Michelle Obama picture: It was just too vile. We all know the kind of morally stunted idiots who are out there trolling the Internet, so there’s no need for me to pollute this space with their loathsome images,
