The UN invites Mugabe to talk about the world food crisis – which makes sense: When you want to learn about evil, ask Hitler

Just when you think you have heard everything already – at least ten times – your online newspaper comes with this bit of news:

Delegations from 162 countries, gathered in Rome to seek ways out of a global food crisis, will be addressed today by President Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

Yes…

The guy who single-handedly dragged his country from relative riches to, in this case literally, a state of wretchedness even the Devil Himself would find hard to recreate in Hell; the guy who mismanaged the economy to such an extent that the country’s yearly inflation has now broken the 100,000% barrier; the man who tortures and kills his own people in ways and numbers that put most of the old colonial regimes to shame…

… but even more to the point here, the man who through neglect, theft, murder and repossessions turned the country that once was the bread basket of Southern Africa into a famine-ridden Hell hole of a place, that now has to rely on the outside world to feed its people…

…that man was asked by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to give a speech on the global food crisis.

It makes sense, in a horrifically ironic way: Who better to give a discourse on evil than a Hitler, a Stalin etcetera? Mugabe is, indeed, an expert when it comes to starving his own people. Still, the FAO, like so many of these UN sub-groups, have proven themselves to be as useless, as arrogant and as vile as… well, as their guest speaker himself, I guess.

No wonder the UN is held in such low esteem almost all around the world, these days. It’s forever complaining it is not listened to enough, not taken seriously enough. Well, keep inviting the Mugabes of the world to your Mad Hatter tea parties and soon people will think that even the foreign policies of the American mad king George and his neo-cons make more sense than those of the UN.

It is a very sad thing to say but when a UN Organisation chooses to honour and invite the likes of Mugabe to speak at their gatherings, maybe it’s time to call it a day and put the UN out of its (and our) misery.
