Does David Beckham contain too much lead?

So, about a year ago, there was this headline:

“Beckham recall is no ‘panic measure’ claims McClaren”

Steve McClaren has denied David Beckham’s England recall is a panic measure and revealed that but for injury the Real Madrid winger would have been in the squad for the past two internationals, against Israel and Andorra

Now, the new England trainer, Fabio Capello announces this:

“David Beckham earns England squad recall”

David Beckham moved closer to fulfilling his dream of reaching 100 international caps after Fabio Capello included him in his latest England squad after assistant Franco Baldini was assured over Beckham’s fitness.

“I always said that when David Beckham was fit he could be in the squad,” said Capello. “I have had good reports on him from Franco Baldini, who watched him on Saturday night, and also from his club. I know a lot about David Beckham and what he can offer the team.

Which is great news for Beckham, of course. By all accounts he is a very nice guy and he is certainly not a worse player than most of the rest of the England team. So, I truly wish him all the luck with it.

Still, all these headlines are hardly generous, let alone festive.

Instead of welcoming back the lost son and celebrating the 100th appearance of our lucky number 7, all this talk of ‘calling him back’ isn’t very nice.

I mean, they make it sound like he’s some dodgy toy from China which has been urgently recalled to the factory ’cause it contains too much lead or something.
