Taking on the ‘jobsworths’: One cool Cat’s fight against the Squirrels of Evil

You know, it’s such a pity we’re not allowed to do with some pests what people in England, until recently, were obliged to do under the law to the grey squirrel:

For decades the traditional British response to finding a trapped grey squirrel
was to bludgeon it to death with a spade. Until last year anyone catching a grey squirrel was required by law to kill it.

Yes, if you ever have had to deal with the professional obstructionists who call themselves civil servants, from your local bin man to the director general of the Post Office, then you can sympathize with anyone who’d crack when one of these zombified no-men gets in their face just one time too often.

Indeed, even the chilliest of chill-out cat could lose his cool with these obnoxious ‘just-following-orders’ & ‘more-tan-my-job’s-worth’ pests. Sometimes, all you can do is to grab for your spade, or some other handy tool.

As we saw in the news a bit earlier today:

Red Dwarf star Daniel John-Jules was led away by police yesterday over claims he brandished a samurai sword at two binmen. The 47-year-old, who played The Cat in the cult BBC comedy show, was arrested in his dressing gown outside his home.

Witnesses claimed John-Jules went berserk during an apparent row about his recycling with the refuse collectors. Police were trying to establish if a weapon had been used.

One neighbour said: “I saw him out in the street shouting at the binmen and waving what looked like a samurai sword around. He was really screaming and yelling. Next I saw the bin men sitting in the back of an ambulance looking shocked and upset. I was really shocked, this is a very quiet street.”

Another neighbour added: “I heard a lot of noise and shouting and when I looked outside I could see the man dragging his bin down the street with him and waving his arms. I don’t know exactly what happened but I imagine they might have refused to collect his rubbish for some reason.”

Since appearing in Red Dwarf in the 80s and 90s, John-Jules has starred in several films including Little Shop of Horrors and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Red Dwarf ran from 1988 to 1999 with eight series and 52 episodes.
