Sometimes the only reaction to death is helpless laughter

There may not be many good ways of dying - yet some of them are much, much worse than others.

Not necessarily because of the physical pain involved. Sometimes, what’s the most terrible thing about death is its absolute lack of any kind of dignity.

Even worse, if you hear about some of these cases – if you’re not personally involved, of course – sometimes you cannot help but laugh at the absurdity and true horror of it:

A British couple on a romantic Valentine break in New York have been killed by a runaway garbage truck.

Mum-of-four Jacqueline Timmins, 47, and partner Andrew Hardie, 48, were walking hand in hand on the pavement when the truck driver blacked out at the wheel.

The vehicle mounted the kerb, ploughed into the lovers then hit a lamppost before careering into a deli. A man of 23 was also seriously injured.

Driver Auvryn Scarlett, 52, who had failed to take medication to prevent a seizure, was later charged with manslaughter and homicide.

Police said: “Two people died because the driver chose not to take his medication. If he’s not in hospital, he’ll be in jail.”
